Typisch lid Members are individuals from families that own and control an operating business that has reached at least the second generation of family ownership, management or involvement. Membership is typically taken out in the name of the family or family company and then extends to family members including spouses and next-generation members from age 18. Signatories are billionaires and billionaire couples who have publicly committed to give the majority of their wealth to philanthropy during their lifetime or in their wills. Most publish a signed letter explaining their reasoning. A separate Next Generation group, created in 2014, has more than 300 active members worldwide aged 18 to 75, drawn from the children and grandchildren of signatories; their identities are not disclosed because they did not personally sign the pledge.

At FBN Asia, the published route is to review the eligibility criteria, complete and submit an application form, then be contacted by the association to work through the remaining steps. Membership is normally taken in the name of the family business, with a principal member plus alternate, next-generation and supplementary family members nominated afterwards. FBN International's central contact address is connect@fbn-i.org. Someone who meets the billionaire threshold and is ready to make the public commitment contacts the Giving Pledge to express interest. There is no published application form, review committee, sponsorship requirement or interview stage. In the early years Gates, French Gates and Buffett recruited signatories directly. Signatories usually publish a letter on the Giving Pledge website when they join.
Selectivity Not publicly disclosed: FBN publishes eligibility criteria but no acceptance rate or applicant volume. Not publicly disclosed: no acceptance rate or vetting process is published. The threshold is the billion-dollar net worth test plus willingness to make the commitment publicly.
