The Giving Pledge vs TIGER 21

This comparison was generated on request from the records. It carries no editorial verdict and is not indexed. The published comparisons are listed on the compare page.

Read down each column for one organization, across a row for the difference. A bronze mark at the left of a cell means the organizations differ on that row. A dash or “not published” means the organization does not disclose the fact — it is not a zero.

Primary audience Individuals and couples with a net worth of at least one billion dollars, or who would be billionaires but for their giving Ultra-high-net-worth entrepreneurs, investors and executives with at least US$20 million in investable assets, many of them post-exit.
Typical member Signatories are billionaires and billionaire couples who have publicly committed to give the majority of their wealth to philanthropy during their lifetime or in their wills. Most publish a signed letter explaining their reasoning. A separate Next Generation group, created in 2014, has more than 300 active members worldwide aged 18 to 75, drawn from the children and grandchildren of signatories; their identities are not disclosed because they did not personally sign the pledge. Members are wealth creators rather than salaried executives: current and former entrepreneurs, investment managers and senior executives, typically after a liquidity event, whose central problem has shifted from building a business to preserving and allocating capital.

Application process Someone who meets the billionaire threshold and is ready to make the public commitment contacts the Giving Pledge to express interest. There is no published application form, review committee, sponsorship requirement or interview stage. In the early years Gates, French Gates and Buffett recruited signatories directly. Signatories usually publish a letter on the Giving Pledge website when they join. Candidates submit an inquiry and are assessed by a Membership Development Director against the 5Cs. Vetting includes extensive background checks and interviews, and TIGER 21 states the process typically takes about two months. Meeting the capital minimum is explicitly not sufficient on its own.
Selectivity Not publicly disclosed — no acceptance rate or vetting process is published. The threshold is the billion-dollar net worth test plus willingness to make the commitment publicly. TIGER 21 states that meeting the US$20 million minimum "does not guarantee admittance" and that other qualitative requirements apply at its discretion. No acceptance rate is published.

Annual dues No membership dues exist. Peer forums No standing confidential peer forums are published. The Giving Pledge team convenes small-group cohorts, full-day sessions and multi-day learning trips, and runs a separate Next Generation group for signatories' children and grandchildren. Groups start with five founding members and grow selectively to a maximum of fifteen; members meet as a peer group with a moderating Chair.
Confidentiality Signatories' identities and letters are public by design. The Next Generation group is the exception: the Giving Pledge does not disclose its members' identities, on the grounds that they did not personally choose to sign. Confidentiality is one of the four Conditions members must accept, alongside non-solicitation, participation and transparency.
