Athena Alliance

Athena Alliance is a paid membership organisation for senior women pursuing board seats and portfolio careers, founded and led by Coco Brown. Its individual membership, branded The Portfolio, costs US$6,000 a year for a twelve-month term that renews automatically, and can be paid in full or through a payment plan spread across the year. Rather than a directory, the organisation sells structured support: each member is assigned a Member Engagement Advisor described as "part college counselor, part chief of staff", who makes warm introductions and helps build a plan. Around that sit monthly salons and peer groups, more than 100 in-person gatherings a year, seven rotating summits, an on-demand content library of over 500 original video sessions, cohort-based Athena Academy courses, a proprietary reverse-search tool for targeted networking, and an "Atlas Seat" that lets a member sponsor someone in their twenties. Individual membership is open to women and non-binary people only; Athena's enterprise offerings include men. The organisation reports having supported more than 600 women into public and private company board seats, more than 600 virtual salons with over 16,000 participants since 2019, and more than 300 peer group sessions with over 3,000 participants since 2022.

Candidates complete a short application, then meet a Membership Consultant before receiving a personalised membership invitation. Once inside, the Member Engagement Advisor is the organising mechanism: they set a plan, make introductions and steer the member through content pathways. Members attend monthly virtual salons and peer groups, in-person gatherings and summits, take Athena Academy courses, and use the reverse-search tool to identify people to meet. Board placement support runs alongside rather than as a separate service. Non-members can sample Athena through a free Portfolio of Impact assessment and selected public salon sessions.

"Athena members are experienced, high-achieving women who are actively exploring and pursuing their next chapter - whether that means taking on a board seat, shifting industries, starting something new, or leveling up their current work." Most have significant leadership experience; Athena states no single job title is required and that it assesses scope of leadership, influence and accomplishments instead. Average member tenure is 3.4 years.

Athena's proposition is the opposite of the open women's networks it is often compared with: a US$6,000 annual fee, an application and consultation before an invitation is issued, and a named advisor rather than a directory to browse. That advisor is what the price buys, and it is the fairest yardstick for judging value. Two points deserve attention. First, Athena is explicit that it applies no fixed title requirement, so the bar is a judgement about track record rather than a published test, and there is no acceptance rate to check. Second, individual membership is restricted to women and non-binary people, while enterprise cohorts include men - a distinction that is easy to miss. The board-placement figure of 600-plus is self-reported, and Athena itself notes that many placements go unrecorded, so it cannot be independently checked.
