Fundación — Founded on 3 February 1903 by San Francisco Chronicle agriculture editor Edward F. Adams, per the Club's own history.
Commonwealth Club World Affairs is a public affairs forum in San Francisco, founded on 3 February 1903 and describing itself as the oldest and largest public affairs forum in the United States. It is explicitly open to all: membership carries no eligibility test, and the Club's own framing is a national forum for the impartial discussion of public issues, with events attended by members and non-members alike. Programming runs to hundreds of events a year across politics, culture, society and the economy, including the Climate One series on energy and the environment, the Inforum division for younger audiences, the Michelle Meow Show, the California Book Awards and a travel programme. Its weekly radio broadcast has run since 1924 and is carried by roughly 230 stations. Dues are low and published: $135 a year for an individual, $185 for two people at one address, $495 for a small-group Advocate membership, and $84 for students and educators, with monthly plans on each. A Climate One Champion membership is $600 a year. The Leadership Circle starts at $1,000 and runs in bands to $25,000, adding complimentary tickets, private receptions and, at the top, programme sponsorship.
Cómo funciona
Members buy an annual or monthly plan and receive discounted or complimentary tickets to the Club's events, with the discount level rising by tier — 30 percent off one ticket per event at individual level, 40 percent off two at dual level, 50 percent off three at Advocate level, and complimentary tickets from Leadership Circle upwards. Events are held at the Embarcadero headquarters, through volunteer-run regional chapters in the East Bay, Marin, Napa and the Peninsula, and in Silicon Valley, and are distributed by radio, television and podcast. Member-led forums organise programming around particular subjects.
Miembro tipo
Members are the general public rather than a screened cohort. The published tiers accommodate individuals, two people at one address, small groups, students and educators, single-issue supporters through the Climate One programme, and companies buying access for employees. A Leadership Circle from $1,000 upwards functions as a donor programme with escalating access to speakers.

Contexto independiente
This belongs in a reference database on membership organisations only with the caveat stated plainly: it is a public forum with open membership, not a selective community. Anyone can join for $135, non-members can buy tickets to most events, and the Club's own description leads with "open to all". What membership buys is a ticket discount and a claim on a civic institution, and above $1,000 the Leadership Circle is a donor ladder in which the benefits — premier seating, private receptions with speakers, lunch with the chief executive — are explicitly priced. The organisation's identity changed recently: the 2023 merger with World Affairs of Northern California produced the current name, so older references to "The Commonwealth Club of California" describe the predecessor. The 20,000 membership figure comes from secondary reporting; the Club does not publish one itself.
