Founding: Founded by Sara Hamilton as a peer network for family office executives, per the FOX history page.
Family Office Exchange is a membership and research organisation for wealthy families, the family offices that serve them, and approved advisers. Founded in Chicago in 1989 by Sara Hamilton, it began as a peer group for family office executives and expanded into benchmarking research, education and consulting on family governance and enterprise transition. Membership is organised by constituency rather than geography: separate tracks exist for enterprise families, family offices, private investors and multi-family offices, each with its own councils. A FOX Council is a standing peer group of roughly 20-25 people in the same role - family leader, family office CEO, COO, CFO, investment lead or client-experience lead - that meets over the year and requires an additional council fee. Alongside membership, FOX publishes benchmarking studies on family office cost, compensation and structure, and runs forums, workshops, webcasts and an annual summit. Some of that programming is opened to non-members, which is unusual among family office networks and lets prospective members sample the content before committing. FOX does not publish its dues, thresholds or acceptance rates.
How it works
Members join a constituency track (enterprise family, family office, private investor or multi-family office) and may additionally join a role-based Council of about 20-25 peers for a separate fee. Programming runs through in-person forums and summits, virtual workshops and webcasts, and a research library of benchmarking studies. FOX also sells advisory work to member families, which distinguishes it from purely peer-run networks.
Typical member
Members are families that own or oversee an operating enterprise or a dedicated family office, together with the executives who run those offices. FOX does not publish an asset floor, and its own materials describe the community in terms of role rather than wealth band.
Membership requirements
Requirements in detail, with history →Requirements are the tests the organization itself publishes: an age ceiling, a company-revenue floor, a net-worth minimum, a role. Where a figure straddles a range, the organization's own assessment decides. Local chapters can apply stricter tests than the published standard.

| Annual dues | Not publicly disclosed. FOX does not publish dues and begins a membership conversation on enquiry. Two secondary guides give incompatible estimates (roughly US$20,000-80,000 and roughly US$10,000-40,000 tiered); neither could be independently verified. | Source ↗ | |

Structure and programming
Independent context
FOX is one of the oldest organisations in this category and its benchmarking research is widely cited across the family office industry, which is a genuine reason to join beyond peer contact. The trade-off is transparency: FOX publishes neither dues nor eligibility thresholds, and a prospective member cannot price the commitment without entering a sales conversation. It is also not a pure peer network - FOX earns revenue from advisory engagements with members, so the line between community and consultancy is blurrier than at member-owned groups such as CCC Alliance. The membership numbers FOX publishes vary between pages, which makes the community harder to size than the headline suggests. Best suited to families that want structured research and role-specific peer groups; less suited to those seeking deal flow or co-investment.
