Fundación: Founded by Warren Buffett, Melinda French Gates and Bill Gates in 2010; formally announced in June 2010 with 40 initial signatories, all in the United States. The Giving Pledge publishes no office address of its own; it is "a separate but affiliated community operationally hosted by the Gates Foundation", which is based in Seattle.

The Giving Pledge is a public commitment rather than a membership organisation in the conventional sense. Bill Gates, Melinda French Gates and Warren Buffett announced it in June 2010, asking the very wealthy to promise to give the majority of their wealth to charitable causes during their lifetimes or in their wills. Forty people had signed within two months; more than 250 from 30 countries have signed since, representing roughly $600 billion in wealth by outside estimates. Eligibility is a single test: a net worth of at least one billion dollars, or a net worth that would be at that level but for the person's giving. There are no dues, no application committee and no legal instrument; the pledge is a moral commitment, and signatories choose their own causes and give entirely independently. What has grown up around it is a learning community: the pledge organisation convenes signatories for sessions on particular issues and areas of giving, and since 2014 has run a Next Generation programme with more than 300 active participants drawn from pledger families and other young philanthropists. The community is operationally hosted by the Gates Foundation, though it is a separate affiliated entity.

Cómo funciona

A qualifying individual or couple contacts the Giving Pledge through its website form to express interest, then makes a public commitment, usually accompanied by a signed letter published on the site. Signatories then give entirely independently: the Giving Pledge is not an oversight body and not a pooled fund, and it distributes no funds, grants or donations. Only charitable giving counts toward a pledge; donations to political parties and candidates fall outside it. The Giving Pledge team, hosted operationally by the Gates Foundation, provides individualised support to signatories, their families and their staff, hosts an annual gathering plus smaller sessions and multi-day trips through the year, and runs the separate Next Gen group.

Miembro tipo

Signatories are billionaires and billionaire couples who have publicly committed to give the majority of their wealth to philanthropy during their lifetime or in their wills. Most publish a signed letter explaining their reasoning. A separate Next Generation group, created in 2014, has more than 300 active members worldwide aged 18 to 75, drawn from the children and grandchildren of signatories; their identities are not disclosed because they did not personally sign the pledge.

Application process
Someone who meets the billionaire threshold and is ready to make the public commitment contacts the Giving Pledge to express interest. There is no published application form, review committee, sponsorship requirement or interview stage. In the early years Gates, French Gates and Buffett recruited signatories directly. Signatories usually publish a letter on the Giving Pledge website when they join.

Selectivity
Not publicly disclosed: no acceptance rate or vetting process is published. The threshold is the billion-dollar net worth test plus willingness to make the commitment publicly.
Membership term
Permanent: the pledge is a lifetime and testamentary commitment

Contexto independiente

The Giving Pledge is easy to overstate. It is not a fund, it is not enforceable, and it moves no money by itself: signing commits a person to nothing a court could act on. That design is deliberate: it is a norm-setting exercise aimed at making large-scale giving expected among the very wealthy, but it has attracted substantial criticism, and the criticism is well documented. A 2025 Institute for Policy Studies analysis found that 32 original US signatories were collectively about 166 per cent wealthier than when they signed in 2010, and that only eight of 22 signatories who have died actually gave away enough to meet the half-of-wealth test. Roughly 80 per cent of signatory contributions have been analysed as flowing to intermediaries such as foundations and donor-advised funds rather than to operating charities. The rate of new signatories has also slowed markedly: 113 in the first five years, 72 in the next five, 43 in the five after that. For a reference database the honest framing is that it is a public commitment plus a convening community, not a network with obligations.
