Renaissance Weekend is an invitation-only, off-the-record gathering founded in 1981 by Linda and Philip Lader. It began as a four-day New Year's house party on Hilton Head Island shared by sixty families and has since run more than 160 weekends. Four are held a year, at rotating resort locations, and the organisation frames them as an extended family reunion rather than a conference: participants bring their families, children attend a supervised programme called Camp Renaissance, and teenagers take part in both adult and peer sessions. The programme is not fixed in advance but assembled around the biographies and interests of those registered, which is why the organisation asks participants to register at least two months ahead. Days consist of participant-led panels, seminars, workshops and roundtables; evenings run to shared meals, music and humour. The gathering is non-partisan and non-commercial, accepts no outside or corporate funding, and is entirely participant-supported. Attendance costs are disclosed only to confirmed invitees inside the participant portal.

How it works

Roughly four weekends are held each year, each three to four days at a resort. Programming is participant-led: attendees appear on panels, run seminars and lead roundtables, and the schedule is built from the registered participants' own backgrounds. Families attend together, with a counsellor-led children's programme and teen sessions. Everything is off the record, and the organisation takes no corporate funding.

Typical member

Participants are described as national authorities, distinguished professionals and rising stars of all ages from diverse fields. Past attendee categories listed by the organisation include Nobel laureates, Supreme Court justices, governors and senators, chief executives, venture capitalists, Pulitzer prizewinners, Olympic champions, surgeons, novelists, filmmakers, teachers and social workers.

Requirements are the tests the organization itself publishes — an age ceiling, a company-revenue floor, a net-worth minimum, a role. Where a figure straddles a range, the organization's own assessment decides. Local chapters can apply stricter tests than the published standard.

CriterionPublished requirementNoteProvenance
Invitation Participation is by invitation only Invitees are normally nominated by a past participant who understands the weekend's non-commercial, non-partisan, off-the-record format. The Lader family and the executive team also invite directly. The nomination process is confidential. Verified September 2026High confidenceSource ↗
Sponsorship Those writing in to be considered must supply one personal reference, preferably a past Renaissance Weekend participant who knows them well They must also send a link or recent bio evidencing contributions to their industry, organisation or community, and a statement of what subject matter they could contribute to discussions. Verified September 2026High confidenceSource ↗
Other criterion Selection is based on professional experience, personal profile, potential contribution to the programme's breadth and depth, and likely commitment to the weekend's spirit and traditions No age, revenue, title or industry test is published. Other criterion Written agreement to Renaissance's confidentiality policies Required as part of the submission from anyone asking to be considered. Verified September 2026High confidenceSource ↗
Application process
The normal route is nomination by a past participant, through a process the organisation describes as confidential; the Lader family and the executive team also extend direct invitations. A limited number of others may be admitted after writing to the organisation with a bio or link evidencing professional contribution, a statement of interest and of the subject matter they could speak to, one personal reference (preferably a past participant), and confirmation that they have read and will comply with the confidentiality policies. Invited guests then choose which weekend to attend and are asked to register at least two months in advance so the programme can be built around them.

Initiation fees are paid once on joining; dues recur. Chapter dues, retreats, travel and events are usually additional and are listed separately when the organization discloses them. Figures are as published or reported on the date shown — not quotations.

Event costs Not publicly disclosed. "Because Renaissance Weekends are invitation-only, details about fees are available to confirmed invitees once they log in to the participant portal." The organisation states it takes no outside or corporate funding and that all costs are participant-supported. Source ↗
Ranges are taken at their midpoint; monthly dues are multiplied by twelve; the first-listed figure of each fee type is counted and later tiers of the same type are shown but not added; retreats, travel, events and anything the organization does not publish are left out rather than guessed. Independent context

Renaissance Weekend sits between a conference and a family gathering, and the family element is not incidental: the organisation designs around multigenerational attendance in a way almost no comparable body does. The invitation logic is the thing to understand. The normal route is nomination by a past participant through a process the organisation keeps confidential; a small number of people are admitted by writing in with a bio, a statement of what they could contribute to discussions, one personal reference (preferably a past participant), and written agreement to the confidentiality policies. Cost is the largest gap in the public record: fees exist and are participant-funded, but they are visible only after an invitee logs in, so nobody outside can compare the price against other gatherings. The organisation's political prominence, including a 25th anniversary advisory board co-chaired by Gerald Ford and Bill Clinton, sits oddly alongside its insistence on being non-partisan; in practice it means both parties are represented rather than that politics is absent.
