Fondation — Social Venture Partners was founded in Seattle in 1997 by Paul Brainerd with Scott Oki, Ida Cole, Bill Neukom, Doug Walker and Maggie Walker. Social Venture Partners International, the network body, is younger: SVPI's 2027 Global Summit marks "30 years of SVP and 25 years of SVPI", implying SVPI dates to around 2002.

Social Venture Partners is a network of city-level philanthropic affiliates built on the idea that donors should give skills alongside money. It started in Seattle in 1997, when Paul Brainerd — who had sold Aldus to Adobe three years earlier — convened other newly wealthy technology people around a model of engaged giving; the first meeting drew more than a hundred people. Social Venture Partners International was formed later, around 2002, to connect the affiliates that had begun appearing in other cities. Today the network reports roughly 2,200 partners across about 30 cities in six countries, including the United States, Canada, Japan and India. Each affiliate is independently run: it recruits its own partners, sets its own contribution level, chooses its own grantees and organises its own volunteer engagements. SVPI itself does not sell memberships — partners join a local affiliate — and its role is convening, shared learning, a resource hub and the biennial-scale Global Summit, held in Mumbai in February 2027. In fiscal 2023 the network reported $3.7 million in grants and $6.3 million in donated pro bono hours across 580 nonprofits.

Comment ça fonctionne

A prospective partner approaches their local SVP affiliate, not SVPI. At SVP Seattle the published route is an information session, a meeting with staff or a board member, a new partner form accompanied by what the affiliate calls a personally significant gift, and then choosing which activities to join. Partners give money and skilled time: grant committees, pro bono consulting to nonprofit grantees, advocacy and network introductions. SVPI links the affiliates through peer learning, a resource hub, fireside chats and the Global Summit.

Membre type

Partners are individuals, couples, families, businesses and funders who commit both a financial contribution and skilled volunteer time. The model originated among Pacific Northwest technology wealth in the 1990s and remains professional rather than ultra-high-net-worth: SVP Seattle asks partners to average $5,000 a year and states plainly that even this locks out many people, offering flexibility on the figure.

Application process
Prospective partners contact their local affiliate rather than SVPI. SVP Seattle publishes a four-step route: attend a new partner information session, meet with staff or a board member, complete a new partner form and make a personally significant gift, then choose which grant committees, volunteer engagements or advocacy work to join. Communities without an affiliate can apply to SVPI to start one.

Contexte indépendant

SVP is the most explicitly non-exclusive network in this category, and that is deliberate. There is no wealth test, no invitation and no vetting beyond a conversation; SVP Seattle's own page says its $5,000 average "locks out many who have less access to wealth" and invites people to give what is personally significant instead. The trade is that partners are expected to work — grant committees and pro bono consulting are the point, not an add-on. The federated structure means the answer to almost any specific question is affiliate-dependent: contribution levels, grant focus and joining process all vary by city, and the Seattle figure should not be read as a network standard. SVPI's own published counts are inconsistent — 30 cities, more than 29 affiliates, and over 40 affiliates appear on different pages of the same site — which is worth flagging in any directory entry. The organisation has also moved noticeably toward equity and power-shifting language in its stated values, which is a fair signal of its current orientation.
