Gründung: Synergos states the GPC's mission "arose in 2001, from a series of events with fellow philanthropists hosted by Synergos' founder Peggy Dulany and her late father, David Rockefeller Senior". The parent organisation, Synergos, was established in 1986. Synergos publishes no single headquarters address; its contact page lists a US telephone number (+1-646, New York) and directs enquiries to offices around the world.

The Global Philanthropists Circle is the private membership community of Synergos, a US-registered nonprofit founded in 1986 by Peggy Dulany. The Circle itself dates to 2001, growing out of gatherings Dulany hosted with her father David Rockefeller Sr for philanthropists who wanted to work on root causes and to collaborate rather than give in isolation. Membership is by family rather than by individual, and it carries a published financial test: families or individuals must be actively engaged in philanthropic and social investment of US$1 million or more, counted across direct giving, operating foundations, impact investments and donor-advised funds. Two further criteria are unusual. Members must share Synergos' bridging leadership approach and be willing to engage in what the organisation calls inner work (reflective practice intended to build self-awareness before collective action) and they must accept explicit confidentiality obligations covering everything discussed within the network. The programme runs through intimate convenings and retreats, in person and online, Collaborative Communities organised by issue such as food systems and spiritual civilisation, a next-generation strand called Rising Leaders, and a private network platform and mobile app.

So funktioniert es

Each member family is paired with a dedicated senior Synergos staff member who provides personalised guidance, resources and introductions. Members take part in convenings, retreats and dialogues, in person and virtual, designed around peer exchange rather than presentations, and join Collaborative Communities focused on shared issues where they co-create strategies and fund efforts collectively. A private online network platform and mobile app connects members between gatherings. The Rising Leaders strand serves the next generation within member families. Membership enquiries go to the GPC managing director rather than through an online application.

Unabhängiger Kontext

The GPC is one of the few philanthropic networks that publishes a numeric qualification (US$1 million or more in active giving and social investment), and it is deliberately broad about what counts, admitting impact investments and donor-advised funds alongside direct grants. Two features distinguish it from its peers. The first is confidentiality: it is written into the membership criteria, which is rare in this category and shapes how the convenings work. The second is the inner work requirement, a reflective practice component that members must be willing to engage with; prospective members who want a pure deal-flow or co-funding network will find the emphasis on self-awareness and personal reflection either the main draw or a poor fit, and there is little middle ground. Membership is by family with a named Synergos staff contact, which is closer to a private-client relationship than a subscription. The significant gap in the public record is money: no dues, fees or contribution level is published anywhere, and neither is member count.
