Sitting chief executives of leading multinational companies
Fundación — "Originally convened in 1933 to advise the executive branch of the U.S. Government"; it began life as the Business Advisory Council attached to the Department of Commerce and later separated from government.
The Business Council is a Washington-based association of chief executives that convenes for off-the-record discussion rather than advocacy. It was first assembled in 1933 to advise the executive branch of the US government, and later became an independent body. Membership is capped at 250 active members, is personal rather than corporate, and is by invitation only, with existing members proposing peers. Each member must be the chief executive of a leading multinational business; those who step down from the chief executive role move into a graduate-member category and continue to attend. The Council holds three meetings a year built around panels, interviews and presentations from government leaders, subject-matter experts and other chief executives, and describes itself as continuing education for chief executives. It publishes no policy positions in members' names, unlike Business Roundtable, and maintains no chapters or regional structure. An executive committee drawn from the membership, chaired by a serving member, governs the organisation.
Cómo funciona
The Council convenes three times a year. Meetings combine panels, interviews and presentations from outside speakers with peer-to-peer discussion among the chief executives present. There is no committee or advocacy apparatus and no local structure; the meetings are the organisation. Members-only sections of the site carry a member directory, conference information and the bylaws.
Miembro tipo
Active members are serving chief executives of large multinational businesses, selected as individuals rather than as company representatives. Members who leave the chief executive role move to a graduate-member category. The published lists include chief executives of major US public companies alongside a smaller number of non-US companies.

Contexto independiente
The Business Council occupies a specific niche: it is the closest thing in the United States to a standing peer body for sitting chief executives of the largest companies, and it deliberately does not lobby, which is what separates it from Business Roundtable. Two features are worth understanding. Membership is personal, so it does not transfer with the job title, and the graduate-member class means the network retains former chief executives rather than shedding them. And there is no route in from outside: peers invite peers, the cap is 250, and nothing about the selection process, dues or meeting content is published. The site names no application, no criteria beyond being the chief executive of a leading multinational, and no fees; anyone assessing cost or selectivity is working from the absence of information rather than from disclosure.
