Primary audience Individuals and couples with a net worth of at least one billion dollars, or who would be billionaires but for their giving Individuals, couples, families, businesses and funders who want to give money and professional skills to nonprofits in their own city, rather than write cheques at a distance
典型会员 Signatories are billionaires and billionaire couples who have publicly committed to give the majority of their wealth to philanthropy during their lifetime or in their wills. Most publish a signed letter explaining their reasoning. A separate Next Generation group, created in 2014, has more than 300 active members worldwide aged 18 to 75, drawn from the children and grandchildren of signatories; their identities are not disclosed because they did not personally sign the pledge. Partners are individuals, couples, families, businesses and funders who commit both a financial contribution and skilled volunteer time. The model originated among Pacific Northwest technology wealth in the 1990s and remains professional rather than ultra-high-net-worth: SVP Seattle asks partners to average $5,000 a year and states plainly that even this locks out many people, offering flexibility on the figure.

Application process Someone who meets the billionaire threshold and is ready to make the public commitment contacts the Giving Pledge to express interest. There is no published application form, review committee, sponsorship requirement or interview stage. In the early years Gates, French Gates and Buffett recruited signatories directly. Signatories usually publish a letter on the Giving Pledge website when they join. Prospective partners contact their local affiliate rather than SVPI. SVP Seattle publishes a four-step route: attend a new partner information session, meet with staff or a board member, complete a new partner form and make a personally significant gift, then choose which grant committees, volunteer engagements or advocacy work to join. Communities without an affiliate can apply to SVPI to start one.
Selectivity Not publicly disclosed: no acceptance rate or vetting process is published. The threshold is the billion-dollar net worth test plus willingness to make the commitment publicly. Not publicly disclosed: no acceptance criteria or rejection process is published. The model is explicitly inclusive: affiliates set flexible contribution levels rather than screening applicants.
