How to judge whether a network is worth joining

A short method for deciding before you pay: composition, structure, economics, obligations, and the one test that beats all the others.

The organizations on this site sell access to people, and the value of access is almost impossible to assess from a website. A few questions, asked in order, get most of the way.

1. Who is actually in the room

Not who the organization describes, but who is in the specific chapter, group or Core you would join. Ask for the composition: industries, company sizes, tenure, how many places are open. A chapter with three vacancies and twenty members tells you more than a global member count.

2. What the structure obliges you to do

Monthly meetings of four hours are a real cost in time; an annual retreat of four days more so. Organizations that publish a time commitment (Hampton: about three hours a month for ten months; C12: under a hundred hours a year) are easier to plan for. Ask about attendance rules and what happens when you miss.

3. How the organization makes money

Member-governed associations earn dues and spend them on programming. Companies with contractor Chairs earn a margin on each group. Free communities earn from what they sell to members. Clubs earn from initiation, subscriptions and the bar. None of these is disqualifying; each shapes whose interests the room serves, and the profile pages say which model applies.

4. What it costs, in full

The published figure is a floor. Add chapter dues, retreats, travel and any investment commitment, and ask about the notice period. The cost calculator does the disclosed part of the arithmetic.

5. Visit

Nearly every organization allows a prospective member to attend a meeting or event as a guest. Nothing else — not the website, not this site, not a friend's recommendation — tells you as much as one meeting with the people you would be sitting with.
