Founding: "Back in 2006, it all began on the world-renowned MIT campus in Cambridge, MA as an informal gathering of finance executives" per the organisation's About page. Jack McCullough, an MIT Sloan graduate, is president and founder.

The CFO Leadership Council is a membership organisation for senior finance executives, founded in 2006 as an informal gathering of finance leaders at MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts and built out into a chapter network across the United States and Canada. It now reports more than 3,000 members across 35 metropolitan chapters plus a virtual chapter. Local chapters run panels, roundtables and workshops; nationally the organisation holds two annual conferences, a CFO Bootcamp, webinars carrying NASBA-approved CPE credit, a mentoring programme pairing members with experienced CFO mentors, and industry mastermind groups. Members also get CFO Connect, a confidential online forum, a searchable member directory, and a library the organisation puts at more than 300 tools and 500 recordings. Membership is a single published tier at $495 a year and is restricted by title: the organisation says it "strictly controls entry, ensuring seniority", and excludes service providers from member forums. Chief Executive Group, which also owns Chief Executive magazine and Chief Executive Network, acquired the Council in 2021.

How it works

Members join at a single annual rate and affiliate with a local chapter, or the virtual chapter if no chapter is nearby. Chapters host in-person programmes through the year; nationally members attend two conferences with VIP access, webinars and CPE-bearing sessions. Between events, members use the CFO Connect online forum to put questions to the wider membership, join mastermind groups by industry or interest, and take part in the mentoring programme.

Typical member

Members are CFOs, senior vice presidents and vice presidents of finance, directors of FP&A, controllers, chief accounting officers, directors of finance and comparable senior finance leaders. There is no published company-size threshold; the organisation vets for seniority rather than employer scale.

Requirements are the tests the organization itself publishes: an age ceiling, a company-revenue floor, a net-worth minimum, a role. Where a figure straddles a range, the organization's own assessment decides. Local chapters can apply stricter tests than the published standard.

Independent context

This is a professional association with peer-group features rather than a peer-advisory organisation in the Vistage sense: there is no confidential standing forum of eight to twelve members with a paid facilitator, and no company-size threshold. What it does have is an unusually low and fully published price - $495 a year with a first-month money-back guarantee - and genuine title vetting, which is the main thing separating it from a vendor-sponsored networking circuit. The mastermind groups and CFO Connect forum are the closest analogue to a peer forum. Two things to weigh: the value is heavily chapter-dependent, since the national programme is conference-led, and the organisation has been owned since 2021 by Chief Executive Group, whose business model includes paid partnerships, so members should understand where sponsor money sits relative to the promotion-free forums the Council advertises.
