Founding: Founded in 2011 by Dan Andrews and Ian Schoen, who had started the Tropical MBA podcast in 2009.

The Dynamite Circle is a paid, application-only community for founders of location-independent, bootstrapped businesses, founded in 2011 by Dan Andrews and Ian Schoen off the back of their Tropical MBA podcast. It has two published tiers. Standard DC membership costs US$697 a year and requires at least US$100,000 in annual business revenue; DC BLACK costs US$5,500 a year, requires US$1 million or more in annual revenue verified by a signed profit-and-loss statement, and adds monthly mastermind sessions of five to seven matched peers, private programming at the main conferences and its own city events. The organization publishes explicit exclusions: freelancers, multi-level marketers, corporate executives and department heads, and certain service categories such as coaching, consulting and recruiting. Activity is split between an online community with a mobile app, more than 200 local meetups a year across cities including Chiang Mai, Bangkok, Tokyo, Barcelona and Portland, and flagship conferences: DCBKK in Bangkok each October, drawing around 400 founders, and DCMEX in Mexico City. Applications are reviewed individually with a stated decision within 48 business hours.

How it works

Members apply, agree to a code of conduct and are reviewed individually. Standard members use the online community and app, attend free local meetups and buy tickets to the global conferences. DC BLACK members are additionally matched into a mastermind group of five to seven peers by track - business, mergers and acquisitions, lifestyle or team - which meets monthly with a facilitator, and get private programming at DCBKK and DCMEX plus DC BLACK-only city events.

Typical member

Members are business owners rather than freelancers or executives, running bootstrapped companies with consistent recurring revenue above US$100,000 a year; the premium tier is limited to founders above US$1 million.

Requirements are the tests the organization itself publishes: an age ceiling, a company-revenue floor, a net-worth minimum, a role. Where a figure straddles a range, the organization's own assessment decides. Local chapters can apply stricter tests than the published standard.

Application process
Applicants confirm they meet six published requirements, agree to the code of conduct and submit an application with written answers about themselves and their business. A team member reviews each application personally and notifies the applicant within 48 business hours. DC BLACK adds a discovery call with the founder and revenue verification through a signed profit-and-loss statement, followed by facilitator-led placement into a mastermind group. Referrals from current members are encouraged.

Independent context

Dynamite Circle is the cheapest serious option in this batch by an order of magnitude, and the most transparent: both tiers, both revenue floors and the exclusion list are published. That transparency is the product of a specific niche - bootstrapped, location-independent owners - which also defines who should look elsewhere. Executives, funded startup operators and service professionals in the excluded categories are told plainly that they do not qualify, and the code-of-conduct and no-pitching framing is aimed at keeping the forum from turning into a sales channel. The gap between the two tiers is large in both price and product: standard membership is essentially community access, while DC BLACK is a facilitated mastermind with revenue verification. Note the inconsistency in the organization's own member counts, 1,400+ on the homepage against 1,000+ on the story page.
