Founding: Founded as the Controllers Institute of America in 1931; renamed Financial Executives Institute in 1962 and Financial Executives International in 2000.

Financial Executives International is a US professional association for senior corporate finance executives, founded in 1931 as the Controllers Institute of America. It became the Financial Executives Institute in 1962 and adopted its current name in 2000 as its membership internationalised. FEI reports more than 10,000 members and lists 56 local chapters on its own chapter index. Unlike most peer-advisory organisations, FEI applies an explicit two-part eligibility test: a qualifying title such as CFO, chief accounting officer, controller, treasurer, VP of finance, tax or risk management, a director in those functions, or audit committee service; and a company that meets a size threshold. Chapters run local programmes, and nationally FEI runs conferences including Corporate Financial Reporting Insights, technical committees, research through the Financial Education & Research Foundation established in 1944, professional development carrying CPE credit, and advocacy with standard-setters and regulators. Service providers and start-ups are not eligible. National dues are published; chapter dues are additional and vary by location.

How it works

Members apply online, are checked against the title and company-size tests, and join a local chapter - required if they live within 75 miles of one - or hold national membership without a chapter. Chapters run monthly meetings, panels and technical sessions; nationally members attend conferences, take CPE-bearing courses, use FEI research and can serve on technical committees that comment on accounting and reporting policy.

Typical member

Members hold policy-making finance roles at companies across every major industry, from Fortune 500 businesses to mid-sized enterprises. Eligibility requires both a qualifying title and a company that clears a size test.

Requirements are the tests the organization itself publishes: an age ceiling, a company-revenue floor, a net-worth minimum, a role. Where a figure straddles a range, the organization's own assessment decides. Local chapters can apply stricter tests than the published standard.

Independent context

FEI is a professional association with a policy and technical-standards role, not a confidential peer-advisory body: there are no facilitated forums of eight to twelve members and no chair-led coaching. Its distinguishing feature is a genuinely published eligibility test - a qualifying title plus a company clearing $10 million in revenue, $2 million net worth or $6 million in capital, with $200 million in assets for financial institutions and $40 million for government authorities - and an explicit bar on service providers and start-ups, which keeps vendors out of the room. Pricing is the weak spot for a researcher: FEI's national dues page sits behind bot protection, and its own chapter sites quote materially different numbers ($309, $399 first year and $499 thereafter, $468 all-in at Sacramento), so a prospective member should get the current schedule from FEI directly rather than a chapter page. Coverage outside the US now runs through separate national bodies such as FEI Canada.
