The Pacific-Union Club is a private club in San Francisco formed in 1889 by the merger of the Pacific Club, founded in 1852, and the Union Club, founded in 1854. Since shortly after the 1906 earthquake and fire it has occupied the James C. Flood Mansion at 1000 California Street on Nob Hill, a brownstone built for the silver magnate James Clair Flood to designs by Augustus Laver and reconstructed and enlarged as a clubhouse by Willis Polk. The mansion was one of the few structures in the immediate area to survive the 1906 fire, and it is regarded as the first brownstone built west of the Mississippi. Beyond its building the club discloses essentially nothing. It has no public website, publishes no membership criteria, application process, fee schedule or member count, and does not advertise. Everything recorded here about its history comes from secondary sources; everything about how membership works is undisclosed and could not be independently verified in this research.
