Fundación — The Our Story page dates the community to 2016 and describes its origin as ten people reading AI papers around founding member Ruchi Sanghvi's dining table, before a physical space opened in San Francisco's South Park neighbourhood.
South Park Commons is a members' community and venture fund for technologists at the earliest stage of deciding what to build. It began in 2016 as an informal reading group around founding member Ruchi Sanghvi's dining table and grew into a physical space in San Francisco, later adding New York and Bengaluru. Membership takes the form of a six-month Member Residency, which the organization says costs nothing and takes no equity; members are expected to work from SPC's spaces during the week, stay active on the community's Slack, and contribute expertise to others. Roughly 175 members are active at any time against more than 1,300 alumni. The investment side is separate and optional: a Founder Fellowship offers US$400,000 for 7 percent through a SAFE plus US$600,000 guaranteed in the next venture round, and the fund writes seed cheques up to US$10 million from a stated US$575 million global pool. The FAQ states that the fund has no right to invest in a member's company, though members raising money are expected to pitch it.
Cómo funciona
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis for the residency and in defined spring and autumn cohorts for the Founder Fellowship. Residents spend six months exploring ideas alongside peer accountability groups, member-led learning forums, workshops and roundtables with outside operators and investors. Members work from the SPC space in their city rather than remotely. Fellowship recipients become lifetime members of the community; the organization says it keeps Fellowship cohorts small, runs roughly one partner per two companies and holds no demo day.
Miembro tipo
The FAQ states that about 70 percent of members are founders who aspire to start a company and 30 percent are researchers and experts going deeper in new fields. Members are expected to be full-time; those holding a full-time job are generally not accepted, with rare exceptions for visa or vesting reasons. Applicants who want to leave or take a sabbatical from university or academia are considered.

Contexto independiente
South Park Commons is unusual among founder communities in charging nothing: the business model is the fund, not dues, which removes the conflict of interest that pay-to-enter networks carry but introduces a different one, since the community that selects you may later price your round. The FAQ's statement that the fund has no automatic right to invest is worth reading alongside the expectation that members raising money pitch SPC first. The residency is demanding in a way that fees are not: full-time commitment, physical presence in one of three cities, and no remote option. That rules out most people with jobs, families tied elsewhere or businesses already trading. The 30 percent of members doing research rather than founding gives it a broader intellectual character than accelerator-adjacent peers.
