Fondation — Incorporated 19 December 1879 as the Chicago club of the Union League of America, a Civil War organisation founded in 1862 to support the Union; the club dates its own charter to 1879.
The Union League Club of Chicago is a private city club in the Loop, incorporated in 1879 as the Chicago club of the Union League of America and now operating from a clubhouse at 65 West Jackson Boulevard. The building contains five dining areas, 160 guest rooms and four suites, a six-floor fitness centre with a pool, spa and salon, meeting and event space, a library and archive, and a substantial art collection displayed throughout the house. The club presents itself as a civic as well as a social institution: it funds and governs three affiliated charities -- the Union League Boys & Girls Clubs, the Luminarts Cultural Foundation and the Chicago Engineers' Foundation -- and runs public-affairs and military-support programming. Members have access to more than 250 reciprocal private clubs worldwide, including through the International Associate Clubs network. The club does not publish membership categories, dues, entrance fees or an application procedure; prospective members submit an information request form or telephone the club, and the terms are supplied privately.
Comment ça fonctionne
Membership is centred on a single clubhouse used for dining, fitness, meetings, overnight stays and events. The club runs interest and affinity programming, including Women of the ULCC, which organises monthly happy hours, networking events and theatre, golf, wine and business-leadership groups. Reciprocal privileges extend to more than 250 private clubs internationally, and the club also participates in the International Associate Clubs network. Business services include private meeting rooms, a virtual office product, concierge services and a business travel programme.
Membre type
Not publicly disclosed. The club publishes no member statistics or occupational breakdown; its programming (business meeting space, a virtual office service, a business travel programme and a women members' group) is aimed at working professionals based in or visiting central Chicago.

The ULCC is unusual among nineteenth-century city clubs in how loudly it states an open-door policy: its membership page leads with a non-discrimination statement rather than a description of who belongs. What it does not state is anything about price or process, which makes cost comparison with published-price city clubs impossible without contacting the club. The three affiliated foundations are a real distinguishing feature -- the Boys & Girls Clubs operation dates to 1919 and runs 21 Chicago locations -- and give the club a philanthropic function that most business clubs of this type do not have. The reciprocal network is large by city-club standards. Anyone weighing it against the nearby University Club of Chicago or a downtown athletic club should expect to negotiate the terms in a private conversation.
