Fundação: Founded in 1862 as a patriotic society supporting the Union and the policies of President Abraham Lincoln; Wikipedia dates the founding to 22 November 1862. Motto: Amor Patriae Ducit.
The Union League of Philadelphia was founded in 1862 as a patriotic society formed to support the Union and the Lincoln administration, and it has operated continuously as a private club since. Its League House at 140 South Broad Street, built in 1865 with Beaux Arts additions completed in 1910 and 1911, runs to roughly 250,000 square feet over eight floors and holds five dining rooms, 84 inn rooms and 14 private event rooms. Beyond the city house the League owns three golf properties -- the Union League Golf Club at Torresdale in Philadelphia, Union League National in Swainton, New Jersey, and Union League Liberty Hill in Lafayette Hill -- plus The Bungalow at Stone Harbor and The Guard House in Gladwyne. Admission runs through a published eight-step process built around sponsorship: a proposer who has known the candidate for at least a year, a prospective member reception, a formal proposal, six sponsors in total, a monthly posting list, civic programming through the affiliated Founding Forward, an Admissions Committee interview and election. Members also hold reciprocal privileges at more than 170 clubs.
Como funciona
Membership is anchored on the League House, which operates as a dining, meeting, athletic and lodging club, and extends to the League's golf and country properties and its shore and suburban houses. The League runs civic and educational programming through Founding Forward, its affiliated non-profit, and candidates are expected to attend those events during the admissions process. Reciprocal arrangements cover more than 170 private clubs worldwide.
Membro típico
Members are drawn from Philadelphia-area business and professional life. The League says it is home to over 4,000 men and women; it does not publish an age, wealth or seniority profile.

Estrutura e programação
Contexto independente
The League is one of the few American city clubs that publishes its admissions process in full, and the process is demanding: six sponsors, a year-long acquaintance requirement for the proposer, a public posting period and a committee interview. It does not publish what any of it costs, which is the main gap for anyone comparing it with clubs that post their dues. The three golf acquisitions between 2014 and 2021 turned a downtown club into something closer to a multi-property club group, which changes the value proposition considerably for golfers and raises the fixed-cost base for everyone else. The League's explicitly patriotic identity is not decorative -- it awards medals and honours public figures, and its 2022 gold medal to Governor Ron DeSantis drew public criticism from some members, which is a reminder that the institution takes positions its members may not share.
