Status: Renamed. The British Private Equity & Venture Capital Association formally became UK Private Capital on 27 January 2026 after member approval at its AGM. The organization describes the change as a rename rather than a rebrand: mission, governance, strategy and visual identity are unchanged, and bvca.co.uk now redirects to ukprivatecapital.co.uk.

Founding — Founded in 1983 as the British Venture Capital Association; the organization's own site says it has been the voice of private capital in the UK for over four decades

UK Private Capital, known as the BVCA until January 2026, is the industry body and public policy advocate for private equity, venture capital and private credit in the United Kingdom. It was founded in 1983 and represents about 600 member firms and roughly 16,000 individuals. Membership is organised into four platforms: general partners, limited partners, professional services and financial institutions, and investee companies. Agreement to abide by the association's code of conduct is a condition of membership, and general partners must additionally hold FCA or equivalent regulatory approval. The association's work covers policy engagement with government and regulators, industry research and statistics, a substantial classroom and digital training programme, and a calendar of conferences and dinners. Subscription rates are published in full and scale with the size of the member firm — for general partners, with European funds under management; for law firms and other advisers, with the number of relevant UK partners or directors. Member firms back around 13,000 UK businesses that employ 2.5 million people.

How it works

Firms apply to the membership team and join one of four platforms, paying an annual subscription banded by size. There are no chapters or forums; members engage through policy consultations and working groups, research contributions to the association's statistics, training courses at member rates, and the events calendar. Employees of member firms inherit access through their firm.

Typical member

Member firms fall into four groups: general partners (PE, VC and private credit fund managers with a UK office or UK investments and FCA or equivalent regulatory approval), limited partners (pension funds, insurers, family offices, sovereign wealth funds, endowments and foundations, plus funds of funds and secondaries managers), professional services and financial institutions, and investee companies.

Requirements are the tests the organization itself publishes — an age ceiling, a company-revenue floor, a net-worth minimum, a role. Where a figure straddles a range, the organization's own assessment decides. Local chapters can apply stricter tests than the published standard.

Independent context

The January 2026 rename is the most important thing to know about this organization, because the old BVCA acronym is still in wide use and the old domain still resolves. Substantively very little changed: the same body, the same fee schedule, a broader remit that now names private credit explicitly. It publishes its fee schedule in unusual detail, which makes it easy to compare against Invest Europe, whose rates are not published at all. The bar to entry is regulatory rather than reputational — an FCA-authorised manager of any size can join, with introductory rates for managers under £100m — so this is a trade body, not a selective network. The strongest reason to join is policy voice and the research data; the weakest is peer connection, for which Level 20 or the association's events serve better.
