The California Club is a private social club occupying a seven-storey Italian Renaissance Revival building at Sixth and Flower Streets in downtown Los Angeles. It dates from 1888 and moved into its present clubhouse, designed by Robert D. Farquhar, in 1930. The club runs dining rooms on the first, second and third floors, a bar and terrace, overnight suites and rooms, a fitness centre, barber shop, an in-house wine and spirits shop and private event space. Its public website is deliberately thin on membership: the single membership page states that membership is by invitation from current members and that the membership office is not open to the public. There is no application form, fee schedule, eligibility statement or member count anywhere on the site. What the club does publish in detail is conduct: a floor-by-floor dress code that bars denim, athletic shoes, hats and untucked shirts in the main rooms, a technology policy confining voice and video calls to telephone alcoves and private rooms, and a standing instruction that staff decline gratuities. The club was male-only until 1987 and admitted its first Black member in 1988.
