Founding: "The CEO Institute was founded in 1992, in Melbourne Australia. The first meeting of The CEO Syndicate Program was held in June, 1992" per its own About page.

The CEO Institute is an Australian membership organisation founded in Melbourne in 1992 that runs professionally facilitated peer advisory groups it calls Syndicates. The flagship CEO Syndicate places chief executives, managing directors, founders and owners in groups of 12 to 16 non-competing peers led by an experienced Chair, matched by region and business complexity, meeting monthly for half a day. Parallel programmes serve other cohorts: the Boardroom Syndicate for CEOs and new directors, the Executive Syndicate for C-suite and senior executives, the CPO Syndicate for chief people officers, and the Leadership Program, a twelve-month virtual course for emerging and middle managers. The Institute also awards certifications, publishes a member research series called the Pulse Report, and runs breakfast, lunch and summit events. It expanded from Victoria into South Australia in 1996, New South Wales and Queensland in 1997, Western Australia in 2007, New Zealand in 2015 and Singapore in late 2025. Fees are not published and vary by programme, location and membership category.

How it works

A prospective member speaks with one of the Institute's Directors, who assesses fit and whether a suitable syndicate exists. Accepted members are matched with a Chair and a group of 12-16 non-competing CEOs and founders, weighted for a mix of experience, business complexity, leadership level and industry diversity. Syndicates meet monthly for half a day in person, with guest speakers, member events and access to the wider member network between meetings.

Typical member

Members of The CEO Syndicate are CEOs, managing directors, founders and owners who carry ultimate responsibility for their organisation. The Executive Syndicate takes COOs, CFOs, CPOs, CMOs, CTOs, general managers and divisional heads. No revenue or headcount threshold is published.

Requirements are the tests the organization itself publishes: an age ceiling, a company-revenue floor, a net-worth minimum, a role. Where a figure straddles a range, the organization's own assessment decides. Local chapters can apply stricter tests than the published standard.

Application process
An enquiry form or brochure request goes to one of the Institute's Directors, who discusses the applicant's role, business and market to establish whether a syndicate is a fit. The Institute then matches the member to a Chair and a group with the right mix of experience, business complexity and industry diversity, checking for conflicts of interest. Membership applications for the face-to-face programme are completed on a form with conditions of membership obtained from the local office.

Independent context

The CEO Institute is the main home-grown Australian alternative to the Vistage-derived TEC model, and its half-day monthly format is a lighter commitment than Vistage's full day plus a coaching session; it also does not bundle one-to-one coaching into the standard CEO Syndicate the way Vistage does. The programme ladder - Leadership Program, Executive Syndicate, CPO Syndicate, CEO Syndicate, Boardroom Syndicate - lets a company keep several tiers of leaders inside one organisation, which is unusual. Against that, it publishes no price, no eligibility threshold and no current membership figure; the only number on the site, 5,726, is a lifetime members-and-alumni total and should not be read as active membership. The Singapore syndicate opened in late 2025 and is described as a foundation group, so an applicant there is joining something still being built.
