Fundación — The Alliance's about page states it was "Founded in 2006 by family business leaders who saw the need to establish a supportive community for family business professionals" and marks 2026 as its 20th year. Secondary sources describe the launch as being spearheaded by the Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce and the Family Owned Business Institute at Grand Valley State University's Seidman College of Business.

The Family Business Alliance is a West Michigan membership organisation for family-owned companies, founded in Grand Rapids in 2006 and now serving close to 200 member companies. It is a 501(c)(6) trade organisation rather than a charity, and its programming sits on three declared pillars: connections, leadership and governance. The core product is peer groups of eight to ten members that meet monthly for half-day sessions with an experienced outside moderator, in three streams — NowGen for family members currently running the business, NextGen for younger family members not yet in charge, and KeyGroup for non-family key executives. Around these run more than sixteen events a year plus structured programmes including Succeeding At Succession, Leading Forward and Forging Frameworks of Governance. Membership is sold in five annual tiers from $625 to $10,000, and each tier carries a defined allocation of event tickets, peer group places and programme registrations rather than open access. Peer group entry also carries a separate one-time placement fee.

Cómo funciona

A family business buys one of five annual membership tiers; the tier determines how many signature event tickets, peer group slots and programme registrations the company receives. Peer group placement is a separate step: candidates apply, discuss fit with the membership director and are placed into a group of eight to ten peers at a similar career stage, which then meets monthly for half-day sessions under a paid moderator. The Alliance explicitly states that lead generation is not a goal of the peer groups. Additional programmes on succession, leadership and governance run through the year.

Miembro tipo

Members are family-owned companies in the Grand Rapids region across a wide size range. The dues scale runs from a Small Business tier restricted to firms under $3 million in annual revenue up to a $10,000 Community tier, so both very small family firms and substantial regional employers sit in the same organisation. Peer groups also admit non-family key executives.

Application process
Companies join by selecting one of the five published membership tiers. Peer group entry is separate: applicants complete an FBA Peer Group Application or contact the Director of Membership, who advises which of the three streams fits, and are then placed into a group of eight to ten peers at a comparable career stage.

Contexto independiente

This is a regional organisation doing something structurally similar to what national peer-advisory groups do, at a fraction of the price and with a hard geographic boundary. The tiered dues are unusual in that they buy quantities — so many event tickets, so many peer group slots — rather than a level of status, which makes the value easy to compute and hard to inflate. The three-stream peer group design is thoughtful: separating current leaders, the incoming generation and non-family executives avoids the awkwardness of putting a founder and their heir in the same confidential room. Two caveats. The $625 one-time NextGen placement fee is charged on top of dues, and the Alliance does not publish placement fees for the other streams. And the geographic limit is real — this only works for companies in and around Grand Rapids.
