LAVA

LAVA is a Los Angeles venture-ecosystem association, established in 1984 as the Los Angeles Venture Club and constituted as a 501(c)(6) membership body. It describes its role as connecting investors, founders and ecosystem participants to improve communication, collaboration and deal flow across the region. The organisation is subdivided into more than a dozen industry committees, affinity groups such as Women In LAVA, Young VCs at LAVA and university alumni groups, special interest groups including LAVA Gov, and sector divisions covering biotech, Web3, cannabis, gaming, global, green, media, private equity and space. Programming includes investor round tables, syndication screenings, VC check-ins, private mixers and investor-only gatherings, plus annual events such as Meet the VC, First Look SoCal and the LAVA Awards. Membership pricing is unusually granular and published in full, running from $180 a year for an academic researcher and $199 for an entrepreneur to $485 for a premium individual membership, with corporate and fund memberships from $690 to $3,300 a year.

Members choose a category that matches their role (entrepreneur, investor, VC partner, limited partner, academic or general premium) and get access to the member directory, the LAVA Library and discounted events. Some formats are restricted by category: entrepreneur-only events, investor-only invitation events and LP/VC-only gatherings. Firms can buy corporate, VC fund or academic department memberships covering a set number of employees, which bundle individual seats and, in some cases, committee seats.

LAVA's own description covers limited partners, venture capitalists, family offices, angel investors, founders, incubators, accelerators, universities, researchers, mentors, government officials and legal, accounting, marketing and PR service providers. Its membership tiers price these groups differently, with separate rates for entrepreneurs, investors, VC partners, limited partners and academics.

LAVA's distinguishing feature is that it prices by role rather than by seniority, and then uses those roles to gate its rooms. A VC partner, a limited partner, a founder and a service provider each pay a different rate and each get access to different events, which is a deliberate mechanism to stop investor-only sessions filling with vendors. That makes it a more honest structure than most open venture networking groups, and it also means the value depends heavily on which category you qualify for. Against that: LAVA publishes no member count, so the size and quality of the network cannot be assessed from public sources, and there is no published eligibility verification, so the role-based gating rests on self-declaration. The founding year is stated inconsistently on its own site.
