Detroit Athletic Club
The club states no eligibility test. It describes its purpose as existing "to enrich people's lives through meaningful connections" and its history page identifies its 1913 refounders as leading Detroit citizens, many of them automobile industry figures.
Fondation: The club dates itself to 1887, when it says it was formed by "a group of privileged young men under the spell of amateur athletics"; it treats 4 January 1913, when 109 Detroit citizens signed articles of association at the Ponchartrain Hotel, as a second founding.
The Detroit Athletic Club is a private city and athletic club at 241 Madison Avenue in downtown Detroit. It was founded in 1887 around amateur athletics and refounded in January 1913, when 109 Detroit citizens -- among them Chalmers, Jewett, Kelsey, Joy, Lodge, Metzger, Hughes, Navin and Scripps -- signed articles of association at the Ponchartrain Hotel. Albert Kahn designed the seven-storey Neo-Renaissance clubhouse that opened in April 1915 and the club still occupies it. The DAC combines athletic facilities with dining, event space and member suites, and runs two affiliated philanthropic vehicles: the DAC Foundation, which supports amateur athletics, city beautification, club sustainability and community outreach, and the DAC Enrichment Fund, which preserves the club's art, architecture and history. The public website carries no membership section: there is no eligibility statement, application form, fee schedule or member count, and the only member-facing link is a login. What the club does publish is a purpose-and-values statement, a dress code it describes as erring on the side of formality, a technology guide and parking information. It is a 501(c)(7) social club and reported $45.9m of revenue in its 2023 tax year.
Comment ça fonctionne
Members use a single downtown clubhouse containing athletic facilities including a court centre, dining venues, member suites and event space. The club runs its own programming and states that members enjoy reciprocal privileges with private clubs around the world, though it does not publish the list; the Duquesne Club in Pittsburgh names the Detroit Athletic Club among its reciprocal clubs. Two affiliated funds -- the DAC Foundation and the DAC Enrichment Fund -- carry the club's philanthropic and preservation work.

The DAC's public presence is unusual for a club of its size: it markets its history, values and philanthropy in detail but says nothing whatever about joining. Anyone trying to work out what membership costs or requires will find nothing on the site, and no reliable published figure was located, so treat any circulating number as unverified. The IRS filings give a sense of scale that the club will not: roughly $46m of revenue and $72m of assets in the 2023 tax year, which places it among the larger city clubs in the United States by turnover. The self-applied labels "The No.1 Athletic Club in America" and "Platinum Club of America" come from Club Leaders Forum's commercial ranking programme rather than an independent assessment, and should be read that way.
