Founding: Founded in 2018 by Paul van Zyl and Nick Hamilton; the club's own site states it "was founded in 2018 to convene and catalyse solutions"

The Conduit is a private members' club in Covent Garden, London, built around social and environmental impact rather than around a trade or a neighbourhood. It was founded in 2018 by Paul van Zyl and Nick Hamilton, opened first in Mayfair, went into administration in October 2020 after the pandemic closure, and reopened at 6 Langley Street in 2021 in a building owned by the Mercers' Company. The clubhouse holds member lounges on the second and third floors, meeting rooms, phone booths, private dining, the Birchwood and Nettle restaurants and the fifth-floor Pergola. Programming is the core of the offer: weekly impact talks and debates, weekly member-led Community Groups organised around six themes including climate and nature, AI for good, inclusive economies and reimagining democracy, a monthly Ubuntu Friday, three signature celebrations a year and twice-yearly Days of Action. Membership is a twelve-month contract and is priced in two published tiers plus a discounted out-of-town rate for members living and working beyond the M25.

How it works

Members use the clubhouse on weekdays only (it is closed at weekends) under detailed rules on where laptops, calls and meetings are permitted; the club states explicitly that it is not intended as a dedicated co-working facility. Members join Community Groups that meet on Mondays or Fridays, attend weekly Impact Programming, and may bring up to two guests during the day. An individual guest may visit at most three times in any rolling twelve months before being asked to apply for membership.

Typical member

Members are drawn from impact investing, social enterprise, NGOs, policy and business, and are grouped into member-led Community Groups organised around the club's six Solutions Agenda themes.

Requirements are the tests the organization itself publishes: an age ceiling, a company-revenue floor, a net-worth minimum, a role. Where a figure straddles a range, the organization's own assessment decides. Local chapters can apply stricter tests than the published standard.

Independent context

The Conduit is priced far below the Mayfair clubs in this batch and is transparent about it, publishing both rates and a not-for-profit discount. The trade-off is deliberate friction on working use: laptops, calls and meetings are permitted only in named rooms at named hours, weekends are closed, and the terms say plainly that this is not a co-working club. That will suit someone who wants a programme and a network, and frustrate anyone who wants a desk. The administration in 2020 and the move from Mayfair are worth knowing; the current company reopened in Covent Garden rather than continuing at the original site. Selection is described only in general terms: the club looks for "impact, insight, influence and integrity", with no proposer rule, committee description or acceptance rate published.
