CEO peer groups
Peer groups for chief executives are the oldest and most structured part of this market: a confidential forum of eight to sixteen people who run companies, meeting monthly under a set protocol, inside a larger organization that supplies chapters, events and education. The three names that dominate the category — YPO, EO and Vistage — differ far more than their marketing suggests: on who qualifies (an age ceiling and a company-size test at YPO; a US$1 million revenue floor at EO; a Chair's selection at Vistage), on what is published (YPO and EO state global dues and initiation; Vistage publishes no price), and on how much depends on the local chapter or Chair. Newer entrants such as Hampton narrow the audience to technology founders in named cities; older ones such as Chief Executives Organization exist for people who have aged out of YPO.
Three questions separate these organizations more usefully than their size. First, what is the published entry test, and is it about you (age, role) or about the company (revenue, employees, valuation)? Second, how much of the cost is published: several publish global dues but not chapter dues, which are often the larger number. Third, who actually admits you — a chapter committee, a franchisee, an independent Chair — because that determines how much the experience varies from city to city. The comparison pages set these out side by side, and the qualification tool reads every published criterion against your own profile.
